Recreation is time spent doing an activity one loves to engage in, with the intent to feel refreshed. It gives people a positive change and provides joy and relaxation to both mind and body.
When done alone, recreation allows one to understand their inner self at a deeper level. When done with others, such as family or friends, relationships can be strengthened through shared experiences, communication and reconnection. Leadership and interpersonal skills can also be developed though group recreation which often requires the sharing of ideas and strategies, decision making, and someone to lead the effort. Many recreational activities require increased movement and can help improve physical health and well-being.
With all the benefits that come from recreational activities it is important to set time aside each week to do something that brings joy and refreshment to body and mind.
There are several different ways to categorize recreational activities: passive and active, indoor and outdoor, group and solo, etc. If a person is unsure what they would enjoy doing, they could review the following list for ideas and then experiment with a few of the suggestions that may hold interest for them.
