The human body is truly a marvel with its myriad of capabilities surpassing all man-made innovations. What other creation is dependent upon an internal system of organs that work together synergistically to give the body life to run, work, interact, and enjoy the outside world? Our physical bodies not only allow us to move, study, and work, they are, as Elder Nelson stated, tabernacles of flesh, encompassing and protecting our spirits. To ensure the protection of our spirits and minds, we must protect our physical bodies, our tabernacles. Through balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, we can better take care of our bodies. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) publish Dietary Guidelines to provide Americans with healthy parameters to ensure better health to combat and prevent disease and other health ailments. Many chronic diseases are preventable through lifestyle choices. Heeding the guidelines and standards of health and nutrition by implementing them into our daily lifestyles can help better protect our bodies and, furthermore, our spirits and minds. |
