Cancer Prevention

You can help prevent cancer by making healthy lifestyle choices. Decrease your risk of cancer by following these steps:

  • Don't smoke or use chewing tobacco and avoid second hand smoke.
  • Eat a variety of healthy foods. Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Also, eat other foods from plant sources, such as whole grains and beans, several times a day. Limit fat in your diet by eating fewer high fat foods, particularly those from animal sources.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
  • Limit sun exposure, especially at midday. When you are in the sun, protect yourself with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
  • Get immunized for cancers that are associated with viral infections, such as hepatitis B and human papillomavirus.
  • Avoid environmental and occupational toxins and hazards.
  • Get screened.
