Activities/Events Offered

The following activities are free of charge unless otherwise indicated.

3K Fun Walks:

Encouraging employees to exercise during lunch breaks and providing opportunities for employees to socialize with others in a friendly environment.

The 3K Fun walks are held 6 times during the year (3 in Spring and 3 in Fall) during the lunch hour. All BYU employees and spouses are invited to walk a 1.6 mile route around the BYU campus. Each walk focuses on an important health issue and information is given to increase participant awareness of the topic.

Family Activities:

Providing affordable and fun recreation opportunities for employees to enjoy with their families.

The Wellness Program offers 3 family activities throughout the year. These activities are usually held on a weekend. For a minimal cost employees and their families have been able to participate in activities such as Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Skating and Broom Ball, Mountain Biking, Country Swing Dance Instruction, Miniature Golf, or attending BYU Baseball or Other Sports Events, etc. (There is sometimes a minimal cost involved to attend these activities)

Health Challenges:

Encouraging BYU employees and their spouses to incorporate exercise and healthy lifestyle habits into their daily life.

There are 6 health challenges a year lasting 8 weeks each. Most challenges are individual in nature, but one or two each year are team based. Challenges are tracked either online or on paper depending on the specific challenge. Each challenge has a unique theme and embodies an exercise component as well as an additional health focus (such as healthy eating, flexibility, strength training, etc.) Challenge requirements are set by using 80% of the recommended health standards set by reputable health organizations such as the Mayo Clinic, The American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, etc. To successfully complete a challenge, participants must meet the set requirements for both aspects of the challenge. (If for health reasons a person is unable to meet the requirements of the challenge they are welcome to contact the BYU Wellness Office and arrange an alternate set of requirements.)

For each challenge successfully completed, participants may choose an incentive. In addition, full-time employees who are the contract holder of an approved program with DMBA or Altius insurance may receive cash-back at the end of the year for each successfully completed health challenge. Beginning in 2009, spouses insured by DMBA are also eligible for the cash-back for completing health challenges!

Immunizations:

Helping prevent illness for BYU employees and their families.

Flu immunizations are available to BYU faculty and staff and their families each year in October/November. These shots are free for full-time employees and families who are covered by DMBA or Altius insurance. There is a fee for all non-insured employees. (There is a minimal cost involved for non-insured employees and their families.)

Newsletters are sent out bimonthly to all BYU employees with articles covering important wellness topics from the six areas of wellness.

Screenings:

Helping employees and their spouses identify possible health risks.

Screenings are an opportunity for BYU employees to obtain important feedback on their health. Several screenings are offered throughout the year including:

mammograms (co-pay required)
bone density (co-pay required)
glaucoma and visual acuity.

(Most of these screenings are free for full-time employees and spouses covered by DMBA or Altius insurance. A reduced cost is required for all non-insured employees. Blood pressure screenings and eye screenings are free to all BYU employees and their spouses.)

Well & Wise Seminars:

Providing an opportunity for employees to learn about important health topics from experts or specialists in the field.

Well & Wise seminars are held once or twice a month during the lunch hour. They cover a variety of topics from the six areas of health and wellness and the presenters are experts in their field of study or practice.

Nutrition Workshops:

Helping employees make positive healthy lifestyle changes by providing them with up-to-date accurate infomation and the tools to do so.

Nutrition Workshops are held every Friday during the lunch hour. They are taught by BYU Dietetic Interns and address a range of nutrition related topics from sports nutrition and planning family meals to diabetes and bone health. Workshops differ from Well & Wise seminars in that they are for a small group of participants at a time and address application of good nutrition principles. Participants leave the Nutrition Workshops with tools and resources to make healthy lifesytle changes.
