Food for Thought

What you eat not only impacts your body, but also your brain. We want our brains at maximum health in order to effectively memorize, study, and respond effectively. Just as with our bodies, some foods are better for our brains than others. Here are five of the foods that can help improve brain health:

1. Oily Fish
Oily fish, such as salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, and sardines, contain EPA and DHA, essential Omega 3 fatty acids. Essential means our body cannot make it, so we need to obtain it from food. These essential fatty acids have been linked to healthy brain function. In fact, low levels of DHA have been linked to Alzheimer’s and memory loss.

2. Wholegrains
Your brain needs fuel to run, just like everything else in your body. Your brain needs a very specific source of fuel to run, called glucose. Wholegrains are an excellent source of glucose. Eating wholegrain bread, cereals, and pasta give your brain the energy it needs to function properly.

3. Nuts
Nuts are a perfect source of Vitamin E, which has been shown to prevent mental decline. Other sources of Vitamin E include leafy green vegetables, eggs, and wholegrains.

4. Eggs
Eggs are a great source of choline; something the brain can use to make acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is important for maintaining memory and communication among brain cells.

5. Blueberries
Evidence has shown that blueberries may be effective in preventing short-term memory loss.
